CHURCH OF THE 8TH DAY & THE ELEGY ENSEMBLE PRESENT:

Haunter

Anicon

Skyeater

8P. $10. 21+.

Following 2016’s much more black metal-inspired Thrinodίa and a handful of splits, Sacramental Death Qualia can be seen as a bit of a left turn. Though there were brief passages of progressive death metal-inspired mania found within their debut’s swirling cataclysm, this sophomore effort turns that paradigm on its heat, suddenly so much more death metal than black metal—and all the more progressive and spellbinding in comparison. This type of music—so familiar, but still presented in a new, creative fashion—is meant to be epic and large in gait, and Sacramental Death Qualia’s own stride is heroic, a blackened visage of their own predecessors.
— Decibel Magazine on Haunter’s new album, Sacramental Death Qualia
It’s not too often an album can engross me as much as Anicon’s music can. I somehow feel it’s a hybrid of the best sub-genres of black metal, and the band is able to meld it all together perfectly. Going back to Exegeses and reexamining what the band put out two years ago only amplified my enthusiasm for Entropy Mantra. I looked back and saw I had placed Exegeses at number seven on my year-end list in 2016, I’m glad to hear that album has still held up over time, and this new release surpasses it.
— Metal Injection, on Anicon’s latest release, Entropy Mantra
Skyeater builds upon its black metal foundation with funeral doom (guttural but still elegant!) and overall goth vibes, which add a considerable level of depth to the final result as well as conjuring a tangibly human, emotive sense of darkness than what one might expect from a more orthodox sound. This shit is miserable.
